Warangal, April 1: Enraged by the demand for more dowry by her fiance and his family, G Saritha, 19, started a fast-unto-death in front of her fiance’s house at Kothawada on Thursday.

Saritha told Deccan Chronicle that P Hari Krishna, her fiance and neighbour, used to regularly follow her when she went to college for her intermediate classes, pleading with her to love him. She finally fell in love with him.

They continued as lovers for two years but bowing to pressure from his family, Hari Krishna said that he could not marry her. Later, after the intervention of community elders, the family agreed to the marriage. The betrothal took place at a nearby Hanuman temple on June 3 last year. The marriage was scheduled for a later date, since Hari Krishna’s elder brother was unmarried.

However, even after his brother got married, Hari Krishna’s family kept mum. Saritha alleged that when her family enquired about the marriage plans, Hari Krishna and his parents demanded Rs 2 lakh as dowry. The families had earlier agreed on Rs 75,000 as dowry.

“Our family is very poor and we cannot afford to pay them so much,” said Saritha in an emotion-choked voice. “As the elders failed to convince Hari Krishna’s parents, I began this indefinite hunger strike. I will continue this until he agrees to marry me.”

Women and elders of the community gathered in large numbers to express solidarity with Saritha. Matwada Sub-Inspector Ravindra Kumar visited the spot.
