Editorial Brief: As more and more such disgusting news become apparent, one wonders what the status of literacy, if any, in India is. How can doctors refuse treatment to patients, especially children, knowing fully well that the disease is not contagious?

How can we allow people whom we hand out licenses via our government to practice medicine of choice?

Who will answer these questions for India? Where are we headed with the AIDS crisis? Children are not allowed in schools, not allowed treatment and are subjected to all forms of discrimination, for no fault of theirs.

We stand and observe all this in silent calm as if nothing has happened. How long can we allow such things to go on?

I would like to hear back from atleast someone on this. I would like to try and do something about this.

Thanks

Srihari

Hi,

Lets also digest one truth. Not all doctors have the ability to treat AIDS
patients. I hear this from my uncle who works for the governemnt hospital @
madurai. He also felt that treating AIDS patient may be compartmentalised
into a seperate speciality in medicine. Unfortuntely, the government is not
showing so much interest on this , as much as it is spending on awareness
and pre-emption.

Consider the case of TB. In the earlier days, it was considered not-curable.
Patients were shunned by family, doctors etc.., People had to go to special
TB sanatorium's. Parallely there was a huge amount of effort spent on
finding a cure, creating awareness and today TB patient's have to swallow
just 1 pill a day and the disease gets cured in a month.

Government should do more than just creating awareness. We need lot of
trained doctors to control this pandemic. Givt can invest on research
centres to in each apex hospital in an area to deal with AIDS patients. The
research centres can give training to lot of doctors starting with house
surgeons. This will change this pathetic scene.

Warm Regards

Yes, I do agree that all doctors are not qualified to treat HIV patients, but in this particular case, and in other similar cases, it appears to be unjustified fear and social stigma that is driving the wheel.

Yes, we do need more than just awareness, but I am very doubtful of anything coming from the government side at all. They are very inactive as far as trying to better the lives of HIV patients, and that is what irks me.

We should revoke licence to the Doctor's who refuse to
treat. There are great people in the field of medicine
who dedicated their lives for the sake of their
patients. Some died in the process of treating as they
too got in contact with their patients diseases. We
need only such docks in our country not some money
minded crooks.
