Atal Behari Vajpayee is alleged by the Congress waalas that he was the one who leaked out the names of Indian freedom fighters to escape being arrested by the britons during freedom fighting. Neither Muthu, nor myself were there at that time, nor do we have a way to verify this, six decades hence. What do we do with this then? After all, it is the BJP that talks of national security being at peril in the hands of Antonia Maino and O.Quttrochi? Confused? Muthu is, and so am i.

Muthu asks a lot of other questions as well:

History has it that Richard Att. made a film on M.K. Gandhi, now declared as one of the best films of the century. Why did he not chose an Indian to play Gandhi?

Why did not Mother Teresa be an Indian?

Why was not the Holy Mother of Pondicherry an Indian?

Why were not Annie Besant or Max Mueller or GU Pope Indians?

Why should Indians be people like the traitor who betrayed Veerapandia Kattabomman?

Aren't there Artistes or PMs in India?

Why can't Antonia Maino be India's PM? For that matter, why don't we invite William Jefferson Clinton to assume leadership in India? We have paid him just over a million dollars per hour for a lecture in one of our Universities?

To escape the evil Ibrahim Lodhi's (or someone else's) evil rule, we invited Babar from Mongolia to invade India... why don't we do the same now?

Muthu finally asks this question: "How is India now different from what it was under the british rule?" Britons did a lot of good things for India, the only thing they did that was unacceptable was exploiting Indians for cheap and mean labour. Hey, what is happening now with India in the name of "BPO and Outsourcing"?

Whatever little Muthu or i know, is through history books and through elders who were born before us. But both Muthu and myself belong to that category of people who understand things based on logic and common sense; but no one likes it - both Muthu and i know it.

Finally to our National Anthem: A friend of mine fwded this note about the National Anthem to me - hey, i did not know it, neither did Muthu. Okay, no offense or disrespect to the declared "National Anthem", but hey, i was not born during 1919 A.D., nor was Muthu, nor do we have any authentic way to verify any claim about the "Mera Bharat Mahaan" activities.

Think!

Here is an eye opener on our National Anthem. How well do you know about it? Ever wondered who is the "adhinayaka" and "bharat bhagya vidhata", whose praise are we singing? Could it be God?

"Jana Gana Mana Adhinayaka...", was written by Rabindranath Tagore in honour of King George - V and the Queen of England when they visited India in 1919. To honour their visit, Pandit Motilal Nehru had the five stanzas included, which are in praise of the King and Queen.

In the original Bengali verses only those provinces that were under British rule, i.e. Punjab, Sindh, Gujarat, Maratha etc. are mentioned. None of the princely states were recognized which are integral parts of India now - Kashmir, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Mysore or Kerala. Neither the Indian Ocean nor the Arabian Sea was included, since they were directly under Portuguese rule at that time.

"Jana Gana Mana Adhinayaka..." implies that King George - V is the lord of the masses and "Bharata Bhagya Vidhata" is "the bestower of good fortune". Following is a translation of the five stanzas that glorify King George - V:

First: (Indian) People wake up remembering your good name and ask for your blessings and they sing your glories.
(Tava shubha naame jaage; tava shubha aashish maage, gaaye tava jaya gaatha)
Second: Around your throne people of all religions come and give their love and anxiously wait to hear your kind words.
Third: Praise to the King for being the charioteer, for leading the ancient travelers beyond misery.
Fourth: Drowned in the deep ignorance and suffering, poverty stricken, unconscious country? Waiting for the wink of your eye and your mother's (the Queen's) true protection.
Fifth: In your compassionate plans, the sleeping Bharat (India) will wake up. We bow down to your feet O' Queen, and glory to Rajeshwara (the King).

Nehru chose the present national anthem as opposed to Vande Mataram because he thought that it would be easier for the band to play.
