Tamil Nadu is spearheading a silent revolution in harnessing wind
energy. <p>
In Aralvoimozhy village, a few kilometers away from Kanyakumari,
hundreds of wind turbines hum in tune with the wind, pumping
nearly 450 MW of electricity into southern power grid. "We have
more than 1400 wind mills producing electricity here. Each wind
mill on a minimum produces 4000 units every day and if you
calculate the figure, it is quite high. so Aralvoimozhi is the
world's second and Asia's first wind mill farm producing
electricity in such a large quantity," N. Shankar, a supervisor
at one of the windmills, said.<p>
The windmills have come as boon to the village, where most of the
youngesters have found employment.<p>
"It is good that these wind mills are here in such a large number
because people who live here get an opportunity to work in the
wind mill-related works and this provides them an opportunity for
employment," D. Thangavel, an employee said.<p>
Each windmill costs about 10 million rupees.<p>
India produces 845 mw of wind energy annually, a miniscule
portion of its total power generation of 100,000 megawatts, which
is nearly 12 per cent less than total demand.(ANI)
